How to prepare for a sales call in 5 minutes
You don't always get an hour to prep. But five focused minutes beats winging it every time — and it's enough to walk in sounding like you did your homework. Here's the repeatable checklist.
Minute 1 — Know who you're talking to
Pull up their LinkedIn and company site. You're after three things: their role (what they're measured on), the company's size and stage, and any recent trigger — funding, a new hire, a product launch — you can reference. One specific, relevant detail signals you're not on autopilot.
Minute 2 — Set one goal for the call
Not "have a good chat." A concrete outcome: book the demo, get to the decision-maker, agree a pilot. Write it down. Everything else in the call serves that one goal, and it tells you when you've earned the right to ask for the next step.
Minute 3 — Prepare three questions, not a pitch
The best calls are led by questions, not monologues. Prepare three that uncover the real problem: what they're using today, what's not working, and what happens if nothing changes. Discovery beats a feature dump every time.
Minute 4 — Anticipate the two objections you'll hear
You already know them — price, timing, a competitor, "send me info." Pick the two most likely and rehearse a one-line response for each. (Our guide to handling objections live has the frameworks.) Having the answer ready is the difference between a smooth save and an awkward pause.
Minute 5 — Have your facts within reach
Nothing kills momentum like "let me check and get back to you" on a basic number. Have your pricing, your top proof point, and your battlecard facts open and to hand — so when they ask, you answer.
Five minutes of prep turns "let me get back to you" into "here's exactly what you need."
The shortcut: let a co-pilot hold the facts for you
The manual version works, but it depends on you remembering everything mid-call. A meeting co-pilot does minutes 4 and 5 for you automatically: it generates a one-screen brief before the call, and during it, surfaces the right answer and the right number from your own docs the moment they come up — so you can focus on the conversation, not on scrambling for a figure.
